Why Democrats Will Lose The Midterm Elections
76
The Midterms Are Coming
Anyone who follows politics knows that the midterm elections are coming in November. Almost every political pundit, and everyone on Fox News, predicts that Democrats will lose a substantial amount of seats in November. They are predicting that the Democrats will lose their super majority and if Fox News is to be believed, the Democrats will lose the majority and once again in Republicans will be the majority in Congress.
So what happened? Barack Obama and the democrats gained overwhelming victories in November of 2008. George Bushleft the country in a mess. The economic world was ending, two wars were waging without purpose or leadership, America's respect around the world was lost, etc, ect, etc. Now, the economy is slowly improving, one war actually has ended its combat mission and the other war is better managed and respect around the world is back. So why are democrats in retreat. Why are predictions so bad?
History
The first reason why Democrats will lose the midterm elections is because historically the party that wins a Presidential election loses the next midterm elections. The cause of this is somewhat complex however. Some of it has to do with internal checks and balances. Americans historically have shown that they prefer a split government and never allow supermajorities to exist too long. Bill Clinton won the Presidential Election in 1992 and by 1995 his party lost huge in the midterm elections. History shows this trend over and over again.
But this ties to the second reason, generally the party that loses regroups and refocuses, and comes out stronger. And it is always easier to be the opposition party, all you have to do in point out anything bad that has happened. But generally the opposition party gets it together and is ready to go. After Bill Clinton was in 1992, the Republicans developed the Contract with America, got some young blood into the party and were an opposition party will a clear plan. They were a force to be reckoned with and the democrats were not ready and the Republicans won the majority.
Odd
But what is the reason for the predictions that Democrats will lose so big this year? The historical trend will surely play a role, but the opposition party this year does not have its stuff together. They have no clear plan to move the Country forward like they did in 1994. There is internal fighting in the Republican Party between moderates and conservatives. Tea Party members are claiming that many Republicans are not true Republicans. The Republican primaries have been some of the nastiest elections in History.
So if it is not the opposition party that is causing the democratic loss, what is? The answer is painfully simple: Democrats right now are just that bad.
President Obama
Harry Truman remarked that "the Buck Stops Here" when speaking about the Presidency. So President Obama deserves some of the blame for the fact that the Democrats are in disarray. The real problem is that you don't have to look very hard to figure out why Obama deserves some blame. Candidate Obama was a sight to see. First he took down the Clinton Machine and against the wishes of the Democratic establishment. He was the candidate with a funny name that spoke about hope and who gave speeches that moved mountains. He inspired young and old, black and white, even many conservatives because listening to him simply made people feel good again.
But something happened on the way to the White House. Somebody convinced candidate Obama that he needed to sound Presidential. Somebody convinced Obama that he needed to act Presidential. So Obama began to try to act Presidential and speak with a "president's" voice. No longer was he inspirational. No longer was he the candidate of hope. He began to sound like every other politician.
And this is President Obama's greatest flaw and biggest disappointment. Instead of being himself, he is trying to act the way people think a President should act. He is trying to sound Presidential. He is still trying to convince people that he can be President, instead of just doing the job. And the people around him are trying very hard not to make anyone mad. This is simply not the way it is done. Presidents are paid to make hard decisions. They are paid to get the job done. Nobody respects someone who won't make decisions, won't accept blame, doesn't take risks. So the candidate of hope is the President of fluff, and this is why his mojo is gone. He better find it quick or his majority will be gone and his job will be gone in 2012. Mr. President, instead of trying to act like a leader, just lead and convince people your way is the right way to go.
The Congressional Democrats
It is sad to say but is there are more inept and incompetent group that Congressional Democrats? Seriously, who do these people think they are? They appear to believe that the democratic victory in 2008 had something to do with them when in fact it had nothing to do with them. They believe you can lead without making hard decisions and taking sides. They honestly believe that they are answerable to no one and are entitled to be there. November will teach them they are wrong unless they change their story quickly.
The two leaders of this junior varsity team are Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. And each in their own way have managed to undermine the President and cause Americans to lose faith in the democratic party without actually doing anything. Pelosi's work on the HealthCare bill is the work that made Republican strategists smile. Reid with his complete inability to garner support for anything is the perfect example of democratic spinelessness. Seriously, who put these people in charge?
Can I Have My Change That I Can Believe In Please?
In nearly two years Democrats have halted the economic crisis and the economy is on the rise again. The combat mission in Iraq is over and because the President didn't land on an aircraft carrier and declare mission accomplished so is American moral superiority. The war in Afghanistan is still waging but there is a clear mission and an exit strategy. Jobs are coming back. The environment is a priority again. Education is a priority again. Yet, the perception is that Democrats are going to lose, why?
Because they deserve to lose. Because Democrats are no longer tough. Because Democrats are no longer willing to fight for what they believe. They have abandoned democratic principles are have gone way to the right, yet still let the other side call them Socialists. There hasn't been one terrorist attack under Obama's first two years, a claim his predecessor cannot make, and yet they let Republicans call them weak on defense. Teddy Kennedy fought for universal health care his entire career, yet Democrats were too afraid to even introduce it so now there is a reform package in place that doesn't really reform anything and helps corporate interests, yet they still allow Republicans to call it a government takeover. Democrats have simply allowed the Republicans to characterize them anyway they want without a fight.
Republicans are willing to say or do anything to win and they are not afraid of a fight. They will even tear each other down for what they believe. Democrats right now refuse to fight. They refuse to stand up for what they believe, in fact, they won't even state what they believe in. Democrats are afraid to make anyone mad. They don't want to say no. They don't want to make hard decisions. If you are not willing to fight, how can we be called upon to trust you. How can voters believe you if you don't act like it is important? Get it together democrats, or you will lose, and for that you cannot blame George Bush.

I am not white Bgpappa nor rich
u wanna hug ?
The republicans do have a plan. I wish people would pay attention. Their plan is to repeal all the bad laws that have been pass over the las 20 months. They plan to get government out of the way, and let things to stabilize so people confidence will return.
Beside, if you look at when the country started going down hill, and the recession started, it was in 2007 when the democrats took control of congress again. Remember the congress method. Bush did not write the bills at this time. They were being written by the democrats. So all the laws and governing was controlled by congress. So people need to realize the democrats stated the problems and they are continuing with them driving.
Also, the republicans tried to introduce a bill early to fix the problems with fannie mae and freddie mac, but the democrats would not have any of this. Dodd and Fwank promised everything was in order. Well they lied.
So using a phrase from our beloved president. The democrat got the car keys, and drove us off the cliff. The facts are their.
The democrats and our beloved president wanted to change and rebuild the country the it has made so much unconfidence, that the economy is stillj struggling. All this chance they wanted hurts the business and no one is hiring or investing. Everything is in standstill. The republicans will put an assurance to no big change and things will start taking off again.
Keep on hubbing!
On the immigration problem, it is more on a drug problem than immigration. The problem is Americans are using illegal drugs and creating a market for it. If we would quit using the drugs, the market would go away, and so would the problems. It is a problem we have created and we are not owning up to. everyone who uses illegal drugs have blood on their hands.
Keep on hubbing!
Hello BG, nicely written, but I guess I look at Obama, Pelosi, and Reid and see different people. It's not the rose colored glasses, I just see respectful, hard-working, intelligent political leaders who are trying to gentrify if you will the process and maintain respect for the system when others around them would tear it down and build it in their own image.
I don't believe democrats will lose either house... it will be interesting to see if the quiet faith that I believe exists in the Obama administration will prevail without the bluster and demagoguery of the Republican party's bravado.
I believe voters already changed history once and to believe that history will dictate the November elections is a "self-fulfilling prophecy" only if we acquiesce to it.
Faith my friend can move mountains...
BG, interesting comments. I agree strongly with a point you were making. In my opinion, it seems like the Dems were passing bills that Republicans would normally support instead of what they believed in (HC with no public option as an example). The HC reform bill that passed could have essentially been written by the GOP. It is a giveaway to insurance companies, pharma, etc. Instead, the Dems passed a very "pro republican" type of bill and then let the GOP blast them for being socialists. It's pretty laughable.
There are some great things in the HC reform but it really is the bill that Republicans were willing to live with and not the bill that Dems wanted (even though no republicans supported it)...confusing...Yes!
Much of what you say here is true, particularly in your first two sections and the part about Pelosi and Reid. I don't think Progressives can rule much longer for the simple reason that their ideology is based on lies. Eventually, people see that the emperor has no clothes on. Planned Parenthood—based on lies. The Homosexual Movement—admittedly based on lies. Abortion—based on lies. Multiculturalism—all about lies. Comprehensive Immigration Reform—based on lies. Socialism—based on lies.
The republicans only have a plan that will benefit the rich. The idea that you can just allow capitalism to go wherever it wishes is what caused this recession. When regulation was lifted, big busiiness went mad with way too much power and the result if that the middle class is ceasing to exist. Obama may not defend what is right strongly enough to suit many, but at least he supports what is right. If the repubicans get in office, it will be back to George Bush days. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and we keep passing legislation to speed the process up. It will be a dark day if that happens, as many of us are slaves to big business, forced to work on jobs that offer no benefits or stability, and have no ladders to climb. (:v
Hello BG, I'm still fighting the good fight to get Democrats elected all over the country... I am so determined and dedicated to the task that even out of work, and out of money, I keep on giving my pennies, my time, my trust, hope and determination to the good fight.
Democrats are about vision and principles and Main Stream America... no one is more concerned about the plight of the 98% barely making it these days than Barack and Michelle Obama and many, many, many democrats.
If you want to choose a few slackers go ahead, but they are definitely out-numbered by slacker republicans who are not only divisive, but completely ambivalent to the concerns, plight and needs of the bottom 98%.
Therefore, Republicans send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee!
The democrats are a sorry a bunch compared with 08'.
keep in mind though, way more people vote in the presidential elections, than do in the mid terms.
Obama got 69 million votes to the republicans 44mil in 10'.!
the dems got 44mil in 06'!

And bgpappa you forgot to mention that when Democrats gave Calderon a standing ovation at the house of Congress as he slammed American immigration policies and that was seen by many Americans as they will support others before they supported their own people. And when they keep preaching tolerance to us as an Imam wants to build a Mosque at a sight that is whoilly inappropriate they insulted Americans even further.
It Is more then just economics. Many Americans that do not live in Blue state populations view Democrats as elitist and anti American, and it is hard to argue with them.
