Walmart Hates You
87
Arkansas based Walmart has become a huge worldwide corporation with stores in nearly every city and small town across the United States. Walmart prides itself on its low prices and its corporate philosophy "based on the simple idea of making the customer No. 1." For many, Walmart's low prices are the reason to keep going there and spending their hard earned money at their stores. However, for me, I will not spend another dollar at Walmart. And my reason is simple: Walmart hates me. And guess what, they hate you too.
What Do You Mean?
Most of my experience comes from my local Walmart located at 5821 Antelope Road in Sacramento, California. This is a Walmart Supercenter that is located only a mile from my house and because of convenience of it being so close, my family shopped there a lot. However, no more.
Walmart hates you. You know this from their lack of customer service. You know this because they sell poor products. You know this because nobody inside the store seems to care whether you are finding what you need. You know this because nobody in the store seems to care about waisting your time.
Customer Service
For a company that prides itself on customer service, there is nothing service orientated in their stores. First of all, look at the long lines regularly found at Walmart. No matter what time of day or night there is no escaping waiting in a long line. Even in the 20 items or less checkout areas, the lines seem to always to be at least five people waiting in line with a checker who is in no hurry whatsoever. And while standing there, please notice the number of unused checkout areas there are around the store. And also notice the number of Walmart employees standing around. Last time around, the wait was over twenty minutes long, and I was third in line.
It gets even worse in the ironically named customer service area. This is where returns are done, financial services are offered and where customers go to waste away much of their life. In my local Walmart, there are usually only two people working the counter with as many as ten people waiting in line. Last time around, the wait was over thirty minutes long. And worse, you see Walmart employees talking and chatting right there in front of you with apparently no care in the world, especially not the group of people waiting to be helped.
And if you actually have a question about a product found at Walmart, good luck finding help. Even in their electronics department, most of the employees there know nothing about the products they sell. And if they do know something, good luck trying to get them to leave their seats to actually check if an item in stock or what the price is. I literally had to beg someone to unlock the computer rack so I could spend $400 on a laptop last Christmas. When he sighed and said, "fine" I told him nevermind, I will spend my money at Best Buy.
A Clean Walmart?
You can tell Walmart hates you by the condition of their stores. For the Walmart near my house, it starts in the parking lot. No matter what time of day, it is almost impossible to find a parking space. Some of this is due to the customers at the store, but mostly it is the fact that at least 20 percent of the parking spots are blocked by shopping carts. Carts everywhere and nobody picking them up. And yes, the carts should be put away by the customers, but it is hard when the cart storage areas are always full. And could someone clean up the garbage?
Then you go inside. And Walmart is filled with stuff. Stuff everywhere, but hardly any organization to it. The clothing department has clothes thrown about. The aisles are blocked with boxes. Debris is everywhere. And nobody seems to care. If Wamart cares about its customers so much, why don't they ever clean up?
A Quality Product?
Yes, Walmart offers low prices. But these prices come at a price. For the most part, Walmart offers low quality items. Much has been said about the lead based toys sold at Walmart. But basically, the stuff they sell is junk. It breaks easily and quickly so you end up paying for the lower price.
The lack of quality is no more evidentce than in their produce section. Have you ever really looked at what they consider to be "fresh produce." The lettuce is brown, as are the other vegetables. The fruits are bruised and browned. It actually looks that Walmart buys the bottom of the barrel of fruits and vegetables. Yes, they are cheaper, but the problem is they are cheaper quality. And once you do bring them home, they spoil in a day.
Shouldn't They Pretend To Like Us
Maybe it is just the Walmart near me that has these problems, but I doubt it. And yes, Walmart offers low prices. But does that mean we as consumers have to put up with such horrible service? Doesn't our money mean that we should expect at least decent customer service? Shorter lines? Friendly employees? Cleaner stores? I do not think this is asking too much in exchange for my hard earned money. But after attempts to make my complaints known to the management at the store near my house were ignored, it seems they don't care. It seems that Walmart hates me. And if they hate me, they hate you. They only like your money.

Interesting concept.
Keep on hubbing!
If I have to go to Walmart I don't go to either of the two close to my home. I will drive an extra 15 min to their newest store. You are right some of their stores are disgusting, but the prices are low.
You are spot on about the dirt - a wallmart near us has a filthy car park where as everywhere lelse is clean - a disgrace really.
I don't do Wal-Mart, and wouldn't work there either. They are cheap, sell low quality products for less, and add to the healthcare crisis by employing very few employees on a full time basis with benefits. They hire many, many part time employees, pay minimum wage, and do not guarantee their workers enough hours to be worth the time of traveling to work and back every week. No wonder their employees don't care. They are little more than slaves. People become lazy when there is nothing in it for them, and motivation is missing under such conditions. I can think of nothing positive about Wal-Mart, not the prices, because the products and service are of low quality, and not as an employer, because they offer no hope, or benefits. Their problem is greed, and they thrive on greed, and their greed also causes the other problems you mentioned. Waiting in line is necessary, because they don't want to pay enough people to serve you more quickly, and shiftless lazy staff are there, because no one in their right mind would work there. Those who do work there don't give a damn about themselves or anybody else, because they have given up hope.
I never thought about it quite like that, but yeah, all those things are true and more... and at our Wal-Mart, you can't even ever go to the bathroom there because it's either filthy or in the process of being cleaned, which seems to take at least 5 hours because the janitor cleaning it takes their own frickin' sweet time. But I would not blame the people working there; they have no incentives to work faster or better with the low pay and no benefits...I go to a store here called Meijer. It's got the low prices of Wal-Mart but has friendlier people, cleaner and nicer atmosphere, and shorter lines.
bgpapa - I thought this was gong to be a piece on the influence of Wallmart on our economy, the small businesses they've driven out of business, etc. I've never been a big fan of Wallmart, but the family pocketbook is driving us there. Our Wallmart is super clean and tidy! Just don't get me started on Home dePot, where the salespeople look at you like you are crazy if you want help with a project; and sneer at you if you don't quite know the name of the thing-a-ma-jig that you want.
The lines in Wal-mart are extremely too long and just as you said, their are always employees just walking around the store!.. I find it funny that they wear the vests that say " how may I help you" on the back when everyone knows they won't help you!.. You would think since they work there they would know where to find a specific item.. but nope. they don't. If you remember walmart was not this bad until it became the - SUPERCENTER- It just fell from there. I conducted an experiment of my own. I walked around walmart picking up ALOT of items trying to find something made in the USA.. it took a very long time!!!!!!.. I think it ended up being a pack of socks. Anyways, They clearly have poor customer service. MY BIGGEST pet peeve about walmart is that they are constantly MOVING STUFF!.. if you find something and you go back next week for the same item.. guess what.. its been moved. YOU CAN'T FIND IT!.. Instead of moving things too much maybe they should take a good look around learn their surroundings, HELP PEOPLE, and clean the store/ parking lot!!!.
Canadian Walmart customer here.. Very refreshing to see someone share our frustrations. Our local wal-mart is our go-to destination for groceries however we are overcome with frustration and dissatisfaction due to lack of customer service and overall cleanliness. We actually had employees accuse my wife and I of stealing on multiple occasions. Never bring a stroller into Wal-Mart, you will treated like a villain. One cashier asked us if we were going to pay for our sons toys he was playing with in his stroller, which were clearly worn and used with multiple dings and scratches.. the next time we were accused of stealing the nearly empty bottle of detergent in the basket? I mean, I understand people shoplift and use their children's strollers as a hiding place - but the blatant disregard and lack of customer service when accusing us of theft is astounding.
I hate Walmart. It's too bad they're so damned affordable.
So true. I never buy produce at Walmart. It Spoils too quickly. Where I live Walmart is about it. Welcome to Rogers Arkansas. It's a town next to Bentonville. Walmart doesn't care about you, just your money. If product suppliers would stop selling to Walmart -- Walmart would fall. It's all greed. While you and I are getting by the Walton clan is raking in your money.
I work there overnight and it sucks, but I always help a customer mainly because I've seen the way other associates treat our customers. I do inventory management in the backroom on the GM side, so me and one other are responsible for all freight that comes to the backroom after it is sorted through/stocked. Every single IMS person on my team has acquired an injury on the job. Almost everyone on my team has a slipped disk somewhere in their back. I myself have a torn rotator cuff. They still expect the same amount of speed from you and have outrageous expectations. Sometimes we get four trucks (6000 pieces) which overloads our backrooms and we are still expected to get it off the floor and into the bins in the back and we must do all of this with two people on each side (Grocery and GM). Most nights it's like this and we're pretty much turned into the dead walking come 7:00 AM. We get two days off and pretty much sleep through the first day and try to recuperate. We are so understaffed that sometimes we have to stock and clear the backrooms. So, yeah it sucks lol but it all starts at the top and I do not blame my management team as they are in the same boat as me. I blame the people at the top of the corporate ladder.

Wal-Mart is exactly as you describe in Kansas, as well. I go there for the cheap prices, but it is like a knife in the stomach every time I walk in. I also think Wal-Mart hates their employees as much as us. Low pay, long hours and oppressive management reduces their workers to robotic puppets or lazy shirkers. A bad choice.
The fifty checkout lines with only two on each end open never thrills me, either.
Thanks for this--you said it all.
