Its Not Who You Think
There is a group in America that protest the funerals of the brave men and women who return from Iraq and Afghanistan in a casket. This group holds up signs in front of the grieving parents, children and spouses that claim to "Thank God for Dead Soldiers." This group believes that dead soldiers represent God's hatred of America.
One would think that this group would be made of liberals against the war but it is not. This movement is led by a radical and out there group of religious conservatives who truly believe that God hates America.

The Movement
The movement is as simple minded as it is ridiculous. Led by the WestboroBaptist Church, the God hates America group believes the United States is on a path of destruction. They use quotes from the bible to prove their points. They claim that Abortion is murder and because the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade that God hates America. They claim that because there are homosexuals in the United States, God hates America. They claim that America has become a fornication nation and thus God hates America. They claim that because America allows for divorce and remarriage, God hates America.
And this "movement" claims that the American lifestyle that allows for Abortion, Divorce, fortification and homosexuality will lead to God's wrath. This group offers no answers to any of the problems facing the United States, but only salvation though hatred.
Targeted Anger
While this group claim they only teach the lessons of the bible and follow in Jesus' footsteps, they take a different path to teach what they believe is the truth. Instead of preaching love and peace, this group has targeted their anger towards likely and unlikely individuals. Their first target is President Obama who they claim is the anti-christ. They also attack other democrats like Al Gore. However, their hatred isn't only for liberals and they also hate many conservatives as well. The list includes, George W. Bush, who they call a dolt, Dick Cheney, and the entire Supreme Court, who mind you, were mostly appointed by conservatives. Their anger is also directed towards Matthew Shephard, the homosexual kid who was killed because of his sexual preference. They also hate Jake Gyllenhall and Heith Ledger, not because they were homosexuals, but because they played homosexuals in a movie. They even staged protests and Ledger's funerals.
This group also hates most religious leaders in the Country including Jerry Farwell and Billy Graham because their stance on homosexuality was too lenient. This, of course, leads one to wonder, who does these people actually like?
Misdirected Anger
This is America, and this movement has every right to peacefully protest and spread their "message" in any outlet they deem fit as long as they follow the rules and do not physically disturb others. We all can agree on that.
But this group has taken their movement to an odd and disturbing place. They do not protest in the front of the White House, Congress or staying on the Internet. Instead, these people protest at soldier's funerals. That rights, the very soldiers who are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, are being protesting upon their return to America in a casket. So not only does the family have to deal with grief at the loss of a loved one, they have to deal with groups of people at the funeral holding up signs saying thank god for dead soldiers.
And why you may ask? Because this group believes that every soldier's death is caused by the wrath of God for the wretched ways of American life. So every time a soldier dies, this group celebrates because it is a sign that God is on the job.
Are You Kidding Me?
There are sincere and genuine arguments for and against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and have been for years. But for the most part, liberals, conservatives and everyone else could always agree that we must support the troops. The troops don't decide where to fight, they go where they are sent and despite the odds do their jobs bravely and professionally.
Now this group has taken upon themselves to make sure that even a soldier's funeral is no longer sacred. They have taken upon themselves to ensure that the family cannot grieve in peace. They make the funeral about their so called cause and not about what it should be about, the fallen soldier. And they do this in the name of their religion.
Do these people really believe that their behavior would be condoned by Jesus Christ? They may not like what is going on in America, but does that give them the right to behave in such an unchristian manner.
What amazes me most is that this groups teachings are oddly similiar to another group that claims their God hates America as well. Much of what this group preaches are what is "preached" by Osama Bin Laden on his tapes. Why hasn't fox news come out and called them terrorists?

These people show ignorance at it's extreme. A burial is our final dignity. It is pathetic that these morons use innocent children and come any where near a soldier's funeral. If it were my son or daughter being buried...they would need Gods to stop me from kicking their asses to hell and back.

Disagreeing with policy is one thing. But their actions are another. And they celebrate the death of soldiers because it "proves their point." They are not against the war, but hate homosexuals, abortion, divorce and Americans in general. The war has little to do with their argument.

There are certainly extemists on the right and left side of politics. Most religious conservatives are much more stable and sane than this bunch. Abortion is wrong and homosexual behavior is certainly unacceptable. But, spewing hatred and displaying bad behavior is not the answer.

bgpappa I was made aware of this group awhile ago. I saw Julie Bandares and one of their spokewomen having a catfight on FOX news. And lets call them extreme right wing nutbags. I consider myself pretty conservative and I hardly believe my beliefs would ever go to such exagerrated levels

The stupidity of religious freaks amaze me. God does not hate anything or anybody. He created it all, why would you hate something you create. I only hope that these individules will face true justice in the afterlife, where it counts not in a court. Respect for others and kindness god love. It's a lot different when you actually ARE a lesbian. Fighting for my country also means that I fight for people that live in it with me, which includes those protesters. They have their opinions, and so do I. My faith brings me to do good for others, regardless of our differences. I'm proud of my country, and I'm proud of who I am.

all I can say is the god they have made up is very small and mean. what a terrible disgrace for anyone to display such insensitivity at the funerals of our fine men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice. shame, shame, shame on these people. it should be a crime. very sad to see how they brainwash their children. thanks for writing and exposing this group. I just learned about the God Hates America group last evening on the news..Sounds a little like Reverend Wright and the Obama group. I also understand that this group is only two familys whom have interbred, where inlays some of the problem. It is very sad that they have brain-washed their childred. It is the soldier's that have died to give them the freedom to do what they are doing..Jane Fonda got away with it!

I think they thrive on the attention they get. They made some threats to come to a funeral in Scott County, Tennessee (where I grew up) but apparently they got word that the response from the the local boys would be rather more unwelcoming than what they are used to. LOL.
Freedom of speech, unfortunately, means we have to tolerate disgusting crap like this.
The good thing is, I think it has the reverse effect of what they intend - people are so offended by the stupid signs that they would never listen to the message.

I think it is shameful to wage this kind of protest. It is hate-full, and doesn't reflect any teaching of Jesus I can think of. My pastor is conservative, but once when it was rumored this group was planning to come to a funeral in our city he was livid.
Quite frankly, I am usually suspicious of people who seem to know a lot more about what God is thinking and saying than I do. Too often, their "knowledge" is giving them permission to act in ways which I am sure we would not find Jesus acting.
As Easter, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, approaches, I think it's essential Christians truly reflect on what Jesus said, and how he acted. Too often we - I include myself - fall short of the one we consider our Lord and our Savior.

Actually, there was an interview done by a Fox news reporter where the woman reporting gets crazy angry with these people for their blatant and hateful disrespect for Americans, the soldiers and pretty much people all together.
I remember watching this live. I was watching a documentary on these folks and wow, they are really bizarre. And what was more sinister was how their kids, not more than 7 years old are talking about how much God hates fags.
The interviewer for the documentary ask the kid if something like, "how do 'fags' make you feel?" The kid answers that it makes him very angry. The interviewer ask, "Angry enough to kill them?" The kid answers, yes, they make me angry enough to kill them but I wont because God will."
Also, there was a few of their children then ran away from their family because they didn't like or agree with anything that their family was doing. Turns out, they were also victims of child abuse.
Doesn't surprise me. The father preacher, the hateful leader himself swears in his church even! But thankfully the only people who attend his church are is own family.
First of all, God doesn't hate. He never would and these people are obviously not true Christians. To be a Christian means to be Christ-like and Christ wouldn't go to soldier's funerals and disturb his or her family by telling them that they are going to hell. Christ would never tell someone that God hates them. These people do NOT believe in God and are fake pieces of trash. Do they not realize how ridiculous they are being? How can someone possibly blame God for America's problems? They must be ignorant morons. That's the only explanation because God is not the reason for America's problems. WE the people, are the ones to blame. It's as simple as that.
Teaching religion to children should be a crime. Think about that. Imagine if the first time you heard about Moses parting the red sea, with his will, was shortly after college level Biology. HA!

Actually these people are Christian extremists. This brand of hate, oppression, patronization, and blatant disregard for others is a hallmark of Christian fundamentalists. This is not speculation, but can be easily observed any day of the week, in almost every state and city of our country.

My husaband is a US Soilder and we belive in God 100%. We try not to judge...but this hits home HARD! I am so sorry for all of the God loving families out there that lost there sons,daughters, husbands, wifes so on... I cant belive they can do this Freedom of speech...NO THIS WENT WAY TO FAR! If my husband died and they came around me GOD HELP THEM! Its sad when people twist the bible around and make it there own (religion). They will pay one day we all know it... God WILL see to it! One would assume that the reason for these pickets and signs are to spread their message(god hates america) but most rational people would be hesitant to trust a group who thinks it is okay to tell a greiving family their loved one is in hell, at their own funeral no less.

I know its hard, its hard for me, but you have to recognize that they have the right to do what they do. But that doesn't mean I or you have to like it. No they don't. There is a principle in first amendment law known as time, place and manner. This means that what you say has to be appropriate to the place. You can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater. This is why protesters at things like political conventions are cordoned off in an area well away from where the convention is taking place. You also can't block traffic to protest. The Supreme Court could rule against them if they wanted to.
There's a case where a Albert Snyder, the father of one of the soldiers, is suing Westboro. The 4th Circuit Court of appeals has already ruled against Snyder and it's on the way to the Supreme Court. We can't trust the Supreme Court to rule against these nuts since they gave corporations the same freedom of speech as individuals in the Citizens United v. FCC case. They'll rule in favor of Phelps.
Contact your local motorcycle club like the Hell's Angels or the Wingmen. They've been showing up at some of these funerals "persuading" WBC to back down and go away. These clubs have websites. Tell them that our soldiers' families need their protection. In this case, take the law in your own hands. WBC posts it's demonstration schedule on its website. Show up at a funeral and push them away! Get physical if you have to. They don't understand polite requests, the only thing that will get through is a bit of forceful persuasion.
Interesting Hub, its makes the mind boggle to what these people believe in, surely they must understand without the servicemen, they would be unprotected from real threats to there believes, Im based in London and only once that i know off has a group objected to our troops, it was a home coming parade. Well the news reported the objectors and afterwards groups where set up on facebook ect to highlight this type of thing.

Time, place and manner restrictions cannot be restrictions on content, just on the time, place or way a message is distributed. This is why abortion protesters must stay a certain distance from a clinic.
Since SCOTUS has demonstrated that the majority sees nothing wrong with judicial activism in the Citizens United case, they could rule against the WBC. They're smart folks and could probably come up with an argument if they wanted to. Even if it was a bad decision and reversed later, it would at least give these families a break. Sooner or later, WBC will disband, give up or die off, it's only a matter of holding them off and pushing them down until they do. That's why I hope the Hell's Angels get into this. The nutjobs at WBC deserve to have the chance to fight, really fight, for what they believe in. After all, that's what those dead soldiers did. WBC deserves the same chance. I think the Hell's Angels would give it to them.

The pivotal problem here is that "God is love" according to the scriptures they supposedly represent. They also have forgotten "Judge not lest ye be judged" and "He who is without sin, let them cast the first stone". I wonder what secret sins they hide? Admittedly some issues are ones of concern, but they are far over the top. This is an excellent annd informative hub.

As an Indian, when I look at your country and her involvement in the Gulf and in other places, I would ask what the people of America has gained. In matters of morality I would ask what is your touching stone? Can you sacrifice morals in the name of human rights and freedom of speech and practice? Most of the Americans do not have international political and social exposure. They know only what the American media tell them. It will be shocking to know what the world think of America after September 11. US defense systems with all its sophistication has become a laughing stock. It is good to have an introspection and study of the economic and political status of the US in the global scenario today involving ordinary US citizens to raise US national awareness of problems raised in this post.

Okay, so obviously these people are demented, and more than likely the whole reason they are doing this is to get publicity. If any publicity is good publicity these guys must be basking in it. I wish I could say I was above HATING THE HELL out of these people, but Alas I am only human and when I look at these pictures, and read this article all I can think is Where the hell is Jim Jones when he's needed? They seem to believe that the almighty, perfect, and all knowing God is in the habit of mass producing creatures he ends up hating. May be they think God is also neurotic and this almighty being desperately needs their actions to please Him.

This group is totally messed up and as a firefighter I hope they show up to the funeral of anyone i know because i will promise this, their gonna be leaving bruised and sore because punches and elbows are gonna fly and you can bet the cops who are my friends wont see a thing until they strike me and then theyre gonna be on my side. This group is totally disrespectful and the fact that they protested on the Virginia Tech shooting shows that they themselves need to be shot because they are just as crazy as the psycho who led the shooting at Tech. If they go back to Virginia Tech this April I hope some of my college friends knock a few of them out and knock some sense into them!!!

I don't think Reverend Phelps is a loony. He is a fire and brimstone preacher.
He has an impressive secular resume. He was at one time a civil rights lawyer. Eleven of his thirteen children are laywers.He is not a novice.
For reasons for others to figure out; he is well armed and protected to preach against sin.

You know I am Active Duty Army and I was in the Honor Guard about 6 months ago, and some nut cases with signs came, but I have to say Thank God for the bikers, they did not even come near us. Their is a difference between freedom of speech and harassment, guess those guys will never understand it. I know for sure though if my son or daughter has gotten killed in a war, those guys better not show up cause I have got something for them.

(2) One of Fred's daughters has actually disowned him and changed her name... to hide her identity.
(3) Almost every person in the church and protests is a family member of Phelps
(4) Their sole income is proceeds from litigation suing for being deprived for their Constitutional rights
(5) Westboro Bpatist church is a constant target of police visits for child abuse and spousal abuse yet nothing can be proven
(6) The city of Topeka has enacted multiple resolutions condemning WestBoro Baptist Church
(7) One of their most infamous protests was standing outside the church for the Matthew Shepard funeral with a float saying "Matthew as been in hell for xx days.xx days in hell" and their web site still carries this page.
(8) THe phelps family lives in a compound with children, grand children, etc
(9) Phelps son carries on the family heritage of legal blood sucking by filing law suits against those who block their protests
(10) The web site contains a schedule. It is a pure scare tactic as they seldom show up at more than 1 - 2 of the scheduled locations a month if that many.

How they can go out and maliciously inflict emotional distress to mourning families then cower behind the Constitution, shows us that they are true hypocrites and blasphemers.

A private organization can not legally persecute an employee for being gay, for being Muslim or Christian, or being black or Hispanic, so what gives them the right to punish Ozzie for "admiring" Castro? Seeing as this group despise democrats and republicans alike, it appears they are not politically represented by anyone. So you have to ask, should they be represented? A perfect democracy would represent everyone, but the views these people espouse are seen by most as abominable. It's the same for fascists and communists, should they be represented? I really don't know, what do you all think?
As a psychologist, this God Hates America group appears to have no sense of emotion for the distress they cause others. In the literature, this is suggestive of psychopathy. However, I'm sure they are capable of emotion, so what this indicates is a very entrenched group mentality, or a cult. To see children brought up this way is heart-breaking. Those kids never had a chance of a normal life.
Thomas, as much as it pains me to say, yes, this group should be represented. However, that does not mean they get a member of Congress or something. It means they have the right to free speech, assembly, etc, as much as anyone else. If you love America, you have to defend their right to say things.
But you don't have to defend what they say or what they stand for. I have just as much of a right to go on my little blog here and scream for the rooftops that these people are crazy. And I have. And I will continue to do so. On this Memorial Day, I remember those who sacrificed to ensure that I have that right. And I thank them.
